Women's diaries written in Canada
Kathryn Carter, Ph.D., Laurier Brantford
March 2004

This page lists women's diaries written in Canada. The earliest known diary by a woman is one written in 1753 by Mercy Seccombe who emigrated from Harvard, Massachusetts to Nova Scotia; her diary ends there in 1770 though she did not die until 1797. The diaries range from a five-page document by twelve-year-old Gertrude Pankratz, writing in Manitoba in 1874, to multi-volume works by Mary Kough Brown or Amelia Ryerse Harris who recorded life in the nineteenth century.

The information presented here is also available in published form with a scholarly introduction:  Diaries in English by Women in Canada, 1753-1995: An Annotated Bibliography is the basis for this website and available from the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women. I invite you to write to me with your own additions, corrections, or suggestions so this site can move toward a more complete account of the fascinating diaries by women in Canada. To read twenty Canadian diary excerpts, see The Small Details of Life: Twenty Diaries by Women in Canada published by the University of Toronto Press.
