Educational Links for Geography Teachers

These links focus on assisting grade 9 to 12 geography teachers in Ontario, but are useful to anyone studying geography.  The links are organized into the five ‘strands’ of the new Ontario Curriculum for geography.    A selection of links explaining the curriculum is provided, as well as links to lesson plans and activities.  Teachers, organizations, companies, and publishers have produced all sites, and the course the link is useful for is given. 

Curriculum:

Ontario’s Ministry of Education site provides secondary school curriculum for all disciplines including Geography, categorized under Canadian and World Studies.  The site discusses material covered in grades 9 to 12 geography courses, as well as learning objectives. http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/

tvOntario’s site provides resources for teachers.  Select ‘edulinks’ from the pull down menu at the bottom of the homepage.  Canadian and World studies are divided into the five strands of the Ontario Curriculum and units of study, activities, relevant videos and texts, as well as links for each are provided. http://tvo.org/eng/default.html 

The Ontario Curriculum Centre site provides information on the new geography curriculum, as well as course profiles, textbooks used for each course, units of study, and learning objectives. http://www.curriculum.org/occ/occindex.htm

Geographic Foundations: Space and Systems:

Natural Resources Canada provides this site of Canadian landscapes and landforms.  The site supplies photographs, maps, and information on various types of landscapes and landforms. http://sts.gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/page1/landf/canada.htm Grade 9: Geography of Canada.

Environment Canada provides this primer on climate site to explain what climate is and how it works, as well as what climate change is, and its impacts. http://www.ec.gc.ca/climate/primer/sec-3.htm Grade 11: Physical Geography: Patterns, Processes, and Interactions.

Parks Canada provides this site of the terrestrial ecozones of Canada.  The site provides maps, as well as descriptions of landforms, climate, and biodiversity for ecozones within Canada. http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/natress/inf_pa1/ECO_DES/ECOZONES/ZONE_00E.HTM Grade 9: Geography of Canada.

This Parks Canada site provides information on parks in Canada, history of parks, conservation issues, policies and reports, and provides numerous links. http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/np/np_e.htm Grade 11: Regional Geography: Travel and Tourism.

This site is provided by the U.S. Census Bureau and provides population pyramids for every country.  The site gives students insight into population distribution as well as spatial patterns. http://www.census.gov/ftp/pub/ipc/www/idbpyr.html Grade 9: Geography of Canada.

This site provides users with access to hundreds of communities’ located throughout Canada.  Municipal websites as well as provincial and federal websites are listed.  http://www.ageofreason.com/proj.htm Grade 9: Geography of Canada.

This National Library of Canada website provides historical maps of Canada from 1783 to 1905 along with useful information on the changing face of Canada. http://www.nlc-bnc.ca/confed/maps.htm Grade 9: Geography of Canada.

Human-Environment Interactions:

Methods of Geographic Inquiry:

This USGS site describes what G.I.S. is, how it works, what is special about it, and applications.  The site also provides useful G.I.S. links. http://www.usgs.gov/research/gis/title.html Grade 12: Geomatics: Geotechnologies in Action and Grade 11: Geographics: The Geographer’s Toolkit.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing site provides an education centre containing tutorials for students, information on remote sensing, satellite images of Canada, a glossary, and a list of useful links. http://www.ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca/ Grade 12: Geomatics: Geotechnologies in Action and Grade 11: Geographics: The Geographer’s Toolkit.

This Canada Centre for Remote Sensing site provides access to satellite images of different Canadian locations. The Parks Canada site provides information on the use of G.I.S. in Canada's National Parks. Global Connections:

YouthLinks/InterJeunes http://www.histori.ca/youthlinks/ is an initiative of The Historica Foundation of Canada http://www.histori.ca and is meant for high school students and teachers from across Canada and internationally.

Understanding and Managing Change:

This Great Lakes site provides information on the lakes and states/provinces surrounding them.  Information on current issues, research occurring in the area, the environment, economy, education, maps and G.I.S., tourism, history and culture, and pollution are included. http://www.great-lakes.net/lakes/ Grade 12: The Environment and Resource Management, and Grade 11: Regional Geography: Travel & Tourism.

Sites Providing Information on More Than One Strand:

The Canadian Communities Atlas is a project sponsored by Natural Resources Canada and provides local and national perspectives on physical, economic, human, and historical geography of different regions around Canada. http://cgdi.gc.ca/ccatlas/

Natural Resources Canada’s National Atlas allows users to produce maps, download and print maps, quizzes, and facts about Canada.  The site also provides teaching resources and links organized by themes including physical, economic, and human geography. http://atlas.gc.ca/english/index.html

Geography World provides a number of useful geography links for both teachers and students.  Topics include physical, cultural, and environmental geography.  The site also provides access to games. http://members.aol.com/bowermanb/101.html

The Canadian Council for Geographic Education and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society provide news, quizzes, lesson plans and information on Canada.  The site also provides links for all strands within geography.  http://www.ccge.org/geosources/default.htm

Waterloo Region School Board provides this site for geography teachers and students.  The site contains activities and quizzes relating to Canada. Lesson Plans and Activities:

The National Geographic site provides online adventures, maps, and lesson plans and activities for k-12 teachers including handouts, themes covered, and required materials.  The site also provides a teacher community including bulletin boards, forums, and a teacher store. http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/education/index.cfm

The GeoSources site provides teaching resources covering topics including statistics, natural resources and the economy.  http://www.ccge.org/geosources/teacherres.htm
